The classification system used for this strategy is the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia IBRA regions.

The IBRA bioregions included in the SAAL region are the Stony Plains, Flinders Lofty Block, Broken Hill Complex, Channel Country, Simpson-Strzelecki Dunefields, Finke and Gawler. The Strategy consists of six documents.
