Anyone successful at doing this before? I can tell you that my wife and I are furious with Rbc and will complain about this whether we get our money back or not. You paid for the convenience of using the branch.

The extra conversion fee is to cover the cost of operating multiple branches. You're going to get laughed at if you ask them for your money back.

The "exchange rate" RBC will give you is not the official exchange rate that RBC gets when it exchanges currency or what this currency exchange was apparently offering.

What they SHOULD do is give you the official rate and note the fee on top, but that's not how anybody does it. Anyone can offer to exchange your money at any rate they feel like I'm sorry you're "furious", but it's exactly the same as if you bought an item at a store and then got furious that you saw another store offering it for a better price. That's about the normal difference between an average-not-very-good rate for fx and a very good one.

From that point onward, it's a done deal. Save yourself the embarrassment. Don't even try to get the money back. You always sign for any transactions, so your wife was aware of the bad rate.
