The woman and a man in the home were taken to a local hospital, Zimmerman said. The woman, who has not been identified, later died, he said. Once the woman had been taken to the hospital, Zimmerman said, the dogs were discovered and animal services responded. Zimmerman said he and his staff removed 86 dogs from the home, including two litters of puppies. There also were 12 cats and a turtle on the property, Zimmerman said. There still were about five cats that animal services could not capture Friday morning, and Zimmerman said staff would return to the home later in the day to try to find them.

As animal services technicians brought dogs out of the home one at a time, the dogs were examined, vaccinated and placed in a service truck for transportation to the shelter.

He also said there appeared to be mental health issues involved.

This is rare for our area. Although the dogs and cats were taken to the Stockton Animal Shelter on Friday, they won't be there long.
